The Future of Money
Sweden will not be fully cashless by 2027. Parliament just ordered grocers and pharmacies to take notes. The central bank wants a thousand kronor under the mattress.
Swish already runs the till. The e-krona pilot ended in 2023. The “future of money” in the country that was supposed to kill cash is a law to keep cash alive — and a phone app that already won.
The subtitle writes itself on old listicles: Sweden, first to go cashless, lights-out in 2027. There is no such law. In May 2026 the Riksdag voted the other way. From 1 July 2026, food shops and pharmacies with staffed checkouts must accept cash, with listed exceptions. Banks must offer deposit points “to a satisfactory extent.” That is a cash-preservation statute, not a funeral.
The Riksbank’s Payments Report 2026 goes further. Households should keep about SEK 1,000 per adult at home for a week of essentials. Use cash now and then so the machinery does not rust. Improve cash access. Consider a SEK 10,000 cap on shop cash purchases to hit crime — a limit, not a ban. The 2027 dates that do exist are EU instant-euro rules, an AML cash ceiling of €10,000, and a proposal to stop redeeming invalid old notes from mid-2027. None of those abolish the krona in your wallet.
Three real calendars. Zero “cash dies” law.
- —1 July 2026Grocers and pharmacies must take cash at staffed tills.
- —March 2027Riksbank wants banks offering instant kronor payments — or a plan.
- —July 2027EU AML cap: cash payments above €10,000 restricted bloc-wide.
- —Mid-2027Proposal: stop redeeming invalid old banknotes after ten years.
- —“Fully cashless 2027”Not on the statute book. A magazine caption.
Cash use in Sweden is already tiny. That is a habit. It is not a government end-date.

Swish is the future. The e-krona is a drawer.
Private digital kronor — bank deposits plus Swish — already cleared the street. The state’s digital twin, the e-krona, finished its technical pilot in 2023. A 2023 government inquiry said there was not enough social need to issue one. In 2026 the Riksbank asked Parliament to study the legal plumbing so an e-krona could be switched on later if the digital euro appears. That is readiness. It is not a launch.
Already the till
The cashless future arrived as an app, not a CBDC.
Pilot ended 2023
Political decision not taken. Watching the digital euro.
Riksbank 2026 advice
For outages, war planning, and people without a bank app.
In force 1 July 2026
Food and medicine must still take notes.
The country that was going to abolish cash spent 2026 writing a law to keep it. That is the future of money: an app that won, and a note the state refuses to bury.Macro Discovery reading of the Payments Report 2026 and the cash bill
Cashless is a usage rate. It is not a date.
Sweden did get close in the shops. Then two things arrived: a war-planning mood in Europe, and the discovery that a payment system built on one private ID and a few card rails is a single point of failure. The Riksbank’s 2026 voice is resilience, not evangelism. Keep notes. Build instant payments on Swedish and European pipes. Do not wait for an e-krona that Parliament has not ordered.
The global “future of money” split is the same three envelopes we have seen elsewhere: a private app layer (Swish, UPI, Alipay), a possible state coin (digital euro, e-CNY), and a cash floor the state now wants back. 2027 is when Europe forces instant euro transfers and caps large cash deals. It is not when Stockholm turns the lights out on paper.

No 2027 cashless deadline
From 1 July 2026, staffed food and pharmacy tills must take cash. The central bank wants notes at home.
Swish, not the e-krona
The CBDC pilot ended in 2023. Private instant payments already cleared the counter.
Short answers
Read the statute. Ignore the caption.
- Cash law: Riksdag approval of the government bill — food shops and pharmacies, staffed checkouts, in force 1 July 2026.
- Riksbank 2026: Payments Report — SEK 1,000 cash per adult; improve cash access; SEK 10,000 shop-cash cap proposal; instant-payment push toward March 2027; e-krona inquiry recommendation tied to the digital euro.
- E-krona: technical project ended 2023; issuance is a political decision not taken.
- “Cashless 2027”: treated as an unsourced headline, not a government date.
