The World’s Most Innovative Countries

Switzerland tops the index again — with 9.1 million people, not 8.7.

Size is not the trick. A small rich country with labs, patents and universities can outrank continents. China just walked into the top ten for the first time.

#10China · first time
#4Korea · record high

The number people still attach to Switzerland is 8.7 million. That is last decade’s postcard. At the end of 2025 the Federal Statistical Office counted 9,127,125 residents. Call it 9.1 million. The country is still smaller than many Chinese cities. It is still first on the World Intellectual Property Organization’s Global Innovation Index.

GII 2025 — released September 2025, covering 139 economies and about 78 indicators — puts Switzerland first for another year. Sweden second. The United States third. The Republic of Korea fourth, its best finish. Singapore fifth. China tenth, the first time it has stood in that room.

A ranking of systems, not of headcount

The GII is not “who has the most startups.” It blends institutions, human capital, infrastructure, market and business sophistication, and two output pillars: knowledge and technology, and creative work. A small country that files patents, trains researchers and sells high-value goods can beat a large one that only spends.

A tall flat-vector innovation thermometer rises from Iran at 30.1 to Switzerland's glowing violet bulb at 66.0, with ten countries marked at scored intervals and three color-coded tier brackets identifying elite, advanced, and emerging innovation nations — alongside four insight cards on small-nation dominance, Asia's rise, R&D spending, and patent output per capita. most innovative countries.

9.1 million people, and still first

Switzerland is not first because it is tiny. It is first because the machine is dense: universities, corporate labs, patent attorneys, and an export list that looks like a pharmacy and a precision-tool catalogue. WIPO notes the usual top-five strengths — R&D intensity, institutions, schools, a private sector that actually innovates.

Singapore, with fewer people than Switzerland, leads the world on ten individual GII indicators. Korea’s jump to fourth is its highest rank. These are not accidents of map scale. They are systems that convert a small labour force into outsized filings and products.

A billion people can file more patents. Nine million people can still run a better system. The index measures the system.

China entering the top ten does not retire Switzerland

Headcount is a poor predictor of this list. If it were, China would have been first twenty years ago. What moved China into tenth is output — knowledge, technology, clusters — catching the input machine. What keeps Switzerland first is that the small machine still converts better, per person and per franc.

The 8.7 million figure is a stale prop. Use 9.1 million and the story does not change: the leader is still a country you can drive across before lunch. The useful comparison is not Switzerland versus China by population. It is Switzerland versus other rich small states, and China versus other large middle-income states. India at 38th and Viet Nam at 44th are the long overperformers in that second race.

If you remember two things

①
WIPO GII 2025 Rank

Switzerland first. China tenth, finally.

Sweden 2, United States 3, Korea 4 (record), Singapore 5. Germany slipped to 11.

②
Swiss FSO Population

9.1 million, not 8.7

9,127,125 residents at end-2025. The old postcard number is retired. First place is not.

Short answers

No. The Federal Statistical Office put the permanent resident population at 9,127,125 on 31 December 2025. Roughly 9.1 million. The 8.7 million figure is out of date.
Not on this index. GII 2025 ranks the United States third, behind Switzerland and Sweden. The U.S. is huge in raw R&D and venture money. The GII scores a mix of inputs and outputs per economy, not raw dollars alone.
It entered the GII top 10 for the first time (10th). That is a first for an upper-middle-income economy on this list. It is not first overall. India (38) and Viet Nam (44) remain WIPO’s longest-running overperformers relative to income.

One index, one census

  • Ranking: WIPO Global Innovation Index 2025. Top 10 as in the 16 September 2025 release. 139 economies, 78 indicators.
  • Population: Swiss Federal Statistical Office, 9,127,125 on 31 December 2025. We round to 9.1 million in headlines.
  • Bars: rank-order lengths (11 − rank). They are not GII composite scores.
  • Overperformers: WIPO’s own label for India and Viet Nam, 15 consecutive years.
Do not do this: reprint 8.7 million as current; treat GII rank as GDP or as “number of inventions”; or mix a Bloomberg innovation score into this table.
