The Countries With the Most Billionaires
The United States has 989. That is more than China and India together. It is not more than the next four.
The viral line aged out. On headcount, America still leads Forbes. On a different census — Hurun — China leads. Combined wealth is the blowout that the count is not.
The sentence people want is tidy: America has more billionaires than the next four countries put together. On the Forbes 2026 list, dated to stock prices on 1 March 2026, that sentence is false.
The United States has 989 billionaires. China has 539. India 229. Germany 212. Russia 147. Add the last four and you get 1,127. That is 138 more names than America.
What still holds: the U.S. beats China and India combined (768). It beats the next three — 539 + 229 + 212 = 980 — by nine people. The wealth gap is the real canyon. Those 989 Americans are worth $8.4 trillion. China’s 539 are worth $2.2 trillion.
Three countries hold half the list
Forbes counted 3,428 billionaires in 2026, up 400 in a year. The U.S., China and India together are about 51% of that room. Fifteen of the twenty richest people live in the United States. Elon Musk sat at $839 billion on the March snapshot.

Forbes sometimes quotes “Greater China 610” when Hong Kong is folded in. The bars above keep the magazine’s country-and-territory split.

Hurun puts China first. That is not a Forbes typo.
The Hurun Global Rich List 2026, a January snapshot, counts 1,110 billionaires in China and 1,000 in the United States. India 308. World total 4,020. Hurun finds more Chinese private fortunes. Forbes finds more American public-market ones. Pick a list, pick a winner. Do not splice them.
Record headcount
Was 902 in 2025. Combined wealth $8.4 trillion.
China + India + Germany + Russia
The viral “next four” line loses by 138 names.
Different list, different first
US 1,000 on that census. Not mixed into the bars above.
Forbes world share
1,757 of 3,428 names. Half the planet’s billionaire class, three flags.
The United States still has the most Forbes billionaires. It no longer has more than the next four. The money gap is what actually widened.Macro Discovery calculation from Forbes 2026 country totals
Headcount is a photo. Wealth is the mountain.
989 versus 1,127 is the correction. 989 versus 768 (China + India) is the line that still works. Nine names is all that separates America from the next three. That is not a dynasty. That is a rounding error in a 3,428-person list.
Wealth does not need the asterisk. $8.4 trillion against China’s $2.2 trillion and India’s and Germany’s $1 trillion each is the American fact that survived the headcount catch-up. A billionaire in Shenzhen and a billionaire in Palo Alto are both on the list. They are not the same pile of assets.
Sums use Forbes 2026 country counts: US 989; China 539 + India 229 + Germany 212 + Russia 147 = 1,127. Forbes and Hurun are not added. If you remember two things
US 989. Next four: 1,127.
Beats China + India (768). Beats next three by nine. Loses to next four. Update the tweet.
$8.4 trillion in American names
China $2.2T. India $1T. Germany $1T. The pile, not the headcount, is the blowout.
