How the World’s Megabrands Were Built

Nike’s logo was designed for $35. The Nike brand is now valued at $33.7 billion.

A student drew a wing on tissue paper. A company spent fifty years putting that wing on shoes, athletes, and city walls. The $35 bought a mark. The billions measure a habit.

In 1971 Phil Knight needed a stripe for a new shoe. He taught accounting at Portland State. One of the design students, Carolyn Davidson, had already been drawing his charts at two dollars an hour. He asked her for something that moved.

She put tissue over a shoe sketch and drew a wing. Knight looked at it and said he did not love it. Maybe it would grow on him. The invoice was $35. The mark is now one of the few shapes on Earth that does not need a word beside it.

That is not the same as saying the logo file is worth billions. Interbrand’s 2025 list values the Nike brand — the name, the habit, the stores, the athletes — at $33.7 billion, down 26% in a year, rank 23. The $35 paid for ink. The billions paid for fifty years of being everywhere.

Apple still sits on top. Nike is no longer in the room next door.

Interbrand’s Best Global Brands 2025 is one way to price a name. It is not a company’s market cap. It is not Kantar BrandZ, which uses a different model and much larger dollars. Keep the books on separate desks.

Apple has been first on this list since 2013. This year: $470.9 billion, down 4%. Microsoft $388.5 billion. Amazon $319.9 billion. Google $317.1 billion. The whole top 100 adds up to $3.6 trillion.

Nike peaked at No. 9 in 2023 ($53.8 billion). Two years later it is No. 23 and $33.7 billion. The Swoosh did not shrink. The brand score did.

Brand value, not share price. Kantar BrandZ 2026 prices the same names far higher on another method. Do not mix the two columns.

A flat-vector bespoke suit jacket hangs on a wooden hanger with a price tag showing $35 origin cost and $32 billion current value, surrounded by five brand value comparison pillars for Nike, Apple, Coca-Cola, Google, and Louis Vuitton — illustrating the staggering gap between brand creation cost and modern brand worth. how megabrands were built.

Most of the famous shapes started as a rush job

Megabrands look inevitable after the fact. Up close they look like a deadline and a cheap drawing.

Knight wanted movement. She drew a wing. He shrugged. In 1983 the company later gave her stock and a gold Swoosh ring.

1886

Frank Mason Robinson

Pemberton’s bookkeeper wrote the name in Spencerian script because that was how business letters looked. The writing became the brand.

1960s
McDonald’s arches

From a building, then a letter

The golden arches were architecture first — two yellow parabolas on a roadside stand. The “M” arrived after the building was already famous.

The drawing is cheap. Repeating it for fifty years is not.

A logo is a handle. A megabrand is the number of times a stranger will pay extra because they already know the handle.

Nike did not become a $33.7 billion brand because the wing was pretty. It became one because the wing sat on Olympic shoes, then on Jordan, then on city walls that did not look like ads. Coca-Cola did not become $60.1 billion because of handwriting. It became that because the same red can showed up in every war, every fridge, every language.

That is why Interbrand can drop Nike 26% in a year while the Swoosh stays on the same box. Brand value is a score for how much the name still pulls a purchase. It can fall while the drawing stays perfect.

The $35 bought a shape. The billions measure whether people still reach for the shape when a cheaper shoe is sitting next to it.

A cheap origin story is not a cheap brand

Every megabrand wants the $35 anecdote. It makes the present look like destiny. The useful split is this: the fee paid for a drawing; the valuation prices a habit. Mixing them turns a student invoice into a fairy tale about “the logo being worth billions.”

Interbrand 2025 and Kantar BrandZ 2026 will not agree on the dollar. Apple is $470.9 billion on one list and more than a trillion on the other. That is two rulers, not a fight about whether Apple exists. Use one ruler per chart.

Nike’s fall from No. 9 to No. 23 is the other lesson. A perfect mark does not freeze the score. The wing is still the wing. The pull weakened.

If you remember two things

①
Nike archives Origin

The Swoosh cost $35 in 1971

Carolyn Davidson, Portland State. Knight did not love it. The later stock gift is a thank-you. It is not the original fee.

②
Interbrand 2025 Brand value

Nike is $33.7 billion. Apple is $470.9 billion.

That prices the brand, not the SVG. Kantar BrandZ is a second, larger scale. Do not add them.

Short answers

Yes. Carolyn Davidson invoiced Blue Ribbon Sports $35 in 1971 for the Swoosh. Nike’s own archive and her later interviews match that figure. In 1983 the company separately gave her stock and a gold ring. That was not the original price.
No. Interbrand’s $33.7 billion is a value for the Nike brand as a whole — name, reputation, ability to sell at a premium. It is not an appraisal of a drawing file. The $35 bought the mark. The billions measure the habit built around it.
Different models. Interbrand 2025 puts Apple at $470.9 billion. Kantar BrandZ 2026 puts Google first at about $1.5 trillion and Apple near $1.4 trillion. Same companies. Two rulers. This article’s ranking chart uses Interbrand only.

An invoice and a league table

  • Origin: Nike Swoosh designed 1971 by Carolyn Davidson; documented fee $35.
  • Brand ranking: Interbrand Best Global Brands 2025. Apple $470.9B. Nike $33.7B, rank 23, −26%.
  • Second ruler (mentioned, not mixed): Kantar BrandZ Most Valuable Global Brands 2026. Combined top 100 about $13.1 trillion.
  • Bars: Interbrand dollars scaled so Apple 470.9 = 100%.
Do not do this: call the Swoosh “worth $33.7 billion,” or add Interbrand dollars to Kantar dollars, or treat brand value as market cap.
