The Global Drone Economy
Drones delivered 1 million packages in 2024. By 2030 it will be 1 billion.
One million was one company. China counted about 2.7 million parcels. A billion by 2030 is not a count.

Three numbers
- About 2.7 million — drone parcels in China in 2024. Source: Ministry of Transport.
- 1 million — Zipline deliveries completed in 2024. Cumulative passed 2 million in January 2026. Source: company count.
- 2035 — the year on a McKinsey projection of about 1.5 billion US deliveries. A market forecast, not a 2030 booking.
What the data shows
A common claim is that drones delivered 1 million packages in 2024, and that by 2030 it will be 1 billion. The fact is that 1 million is one company, and 1 billion is not a count. Zipline completed 1 million deliveries in 2024 and said in January 2026 that it had passed 2 million cumulative. China’s Ministry of Transport counted about 2.7 million drone parcels in China alone in 2024. Meituan’s commercial orders were about 450,000 by the end of 2024, 740,000 by the end of 2025, and past 900,000 by May 2026. Wing was flying about 110,000 deliveries a quarter. Adding the named operators puts the world in the single-digit millions. The headline took the company and called it the world.
The billion is a forecast with the wrong year. McKinsey’s October 2024 note put paid commercial deliveries above 800,000 in 2023, and projected about 1.5 billion annual deliveries in the United States by 2035, as a serviceable market. That is one country, a later year, and a projection of what could be served, not a booked global total for 2030. A Zipline and Uber target of 1 million deliveries a day by the end of 2029 is a company goal. A million a day is about 365 million a year if it happens. It is still a target, and it is still not the world.
Packages are not the drone economy. Fee-market estimates put delivery revenue near $1.15 billion in 2025. That leaves out the value of the goods, and it leaves out inspection, farming, and military airframes that share the hardware. Amazon’s posted drone fee is a few dollars a drop. A few million drops at that fee are tens of millions of dollars, not a billion-package industry. A parcel count, a fee market, and a 2035 forecast are three objects. The claim stacks them into one timeline.
A 2030 billion is not on this chart. No one has counted it.
| Count | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| China, 2024 | about 2.7 million | Ministry of Transport parcels |
| Zipline, 2024 | 1 million | One company. Not the world |
| Meituan, end 2024 | about 450,000 | Commercial orders, cumulative |
| Paid drops, 2023 | over 800,000 | McKinsey global note |
| US forecast | 1.5 billion | By 2035. A market, not a count |
How it was measured
A company delivery is a completed drop on that firm’s ledger. China’s 2.7 million is a ministry parcel count. The two can overlap if a foreign firm flies in China, and they can miss a local operator. Single-digit millions is the range after adding the named ledgers. It is not a census.
A 2035 serviceable market is the deliveries a model says could be flown, not the deliveries booked. A company target of a million a day is a press line. Fee revenue excludes the goods in the box. Inspection drones are a different industry that the parcel chart does not include.
What it means
It is settled that Zipline completed 1 million deliveries in 2024, and that China counted about 2.7 million drone parcels that year. It is not settled that the world total was 1 million, or that 2030 will be 1 billion. Use 2.7 million for China. Use 1 million for Zipline. Use 2035 for the US forecast. Do not use 1 billion as a 2030 count.
Common misreadings
- 1 million is Zipline. China alone counted about 2.7 million.
- 1 billion by 2030 is not a count. A US forecast of 1.5 billion is for 2035.
- A delivery fee is not the drone economy. Farming and inspection share the airframe.
Where the numbers come from
How we built this
- Dataset: China Ministry of Transport 2024 parcel count; Zipline 2024 and cumulative 2026; McKinsey 2023 count and 2035 US projection.
- Scope: Completed drops. Company targets and fee-market dollars kept out of the parcel chart.
- Figures: 2.7 million is China. 1 million is Zipline. 2035 is the forecast year. 1 billion in 2030 is treated as an uncounted claim.
